Their expressions are something I’ve never actually taken notice of before (mostly because whenever I rewatch this episode, I’m too overwhelmed by my feelings for my poor Pluto <3 <3) but wow, their expressions are beautiful here.

Neptune looks so shocked and about ready to protest but gets transported before anything could be said. Whilst Uranus looks so distraught and resigned and doesn’t even move at all.

Awww my poor ladies. I love them so <3

I know! I’ve always loved their expressions in this scene.

Even though they were always so focused on their ~*~MISSION~*~ and generally didn’t express many feelings, I think Haruka and Michiru truly cared for Setsuna a LOT as both a teammate and a friend. She was the first person outside of themselves who shared their mission and their motivations. I feel like they appreciated her camaraderie.

Neptune actually manages to get out the first syllable of Pluto’s name before being transported out. She lets out a shocked and horrified “PLU-” before being teleported. On the other hand, Uranus is just in a state of complete disbelief and sorrow. She can’t even get any words out, she’s so traumatized by the inevitability of Pluto’s doom.

I think this speaks a lot to their characters. Everyone seems to think that Haruka is the leader, the no-nonsense doer who is completely devoted to her mission with no sense of doubt. But I think this more accurately describes Michiru in some circumstances. Michiru has accepted a lot of the possible consequences and bears the burden with as much dignity as she can but Haruka is always like “LALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU” about the consequences of their actions and mission. She pretends to be all accepting about it but when questioned she goes out of her way to ASSURE us that YES, SHE IS SO COMPLETELY DEVOTED TO THIS MISSION SACRIFICES MUST BE MADE SO DEVOTED and usually gets emotional and angry.

I feel like this scene shows us the REAL Haruka. The Haruka who really hasn’t accepted the possibility of losing a trusted friend and teammate. The Haruka who isn’t as tough as she presents herself as. Michiru tries to make an effort, as insignificant as it is. But Haruka just sits there. Her expression says “My friend is going to die and I can’t do anything about it. Because it’s necessary. Because she needs to die for this mission to be a success.” Her face is just so heartbreaking to me.

And then the scene that immediately follows this one. The two of them just sit in stunned silence as they watch the helicopter explode.

But then they brush themselves off and continue forward, because they have to. Because Pluto can’t have died for nothing.

Some fans argue that Mamoru and Usagi only love each other because of their past lives as Endymion and Serenity.

But look at them here. They have no idea who they really are. Usagi has no idea she’s the princess or that Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask, and vice versa for him. But she approaches him and tries to be friendly with him. And then they tease each other. And then he basically tells her that he likes her just the way he is.

This scene just convinces me that even if they weren’t the prince and princess, that they’d love each other anyway.
